Giving Blood

So, as you all know my son Davin is having hip surgery in less than two weeks now. The doctor let us know that Davin will need 2 units (I think it's units, but it is 2 of something) of blood during the surgery. You can decide to take the blood from the general public or be a direct donor. I thought that would be great because I could DO something for Davin in that way. Anyway, my Mom and I decided to do that and went today. My Mom was able to give blood as planned, but I failed the iron test! My iron was too low to give. Bummer. I told my Mom that meant she would have to give extra (not really) and then I took her out to lunch. What a nice thing for her to do for her grandson. I was so touched by her gift today as I watched her lying on the table with the blood being pumped out of her arm. Blood that in two weeks will be pumped into my son. Precious gift. My husband gives blood often. It has never been something that I have done, but I think maybe I should think about doing it again (when my iron is up, of course). My Mom was given a sticker that says, "Be nice to me. I gave blood today." I think I will do that.

If any of you want to check out anymore information on Davin, he has his own website. It's http://www.fordavin.com/ There are pictures of all of us and a letter that I wrote talking about how it is to be his Mom.

What a nice Mom you have!

I tried to give blood once and was denied because I used to live in Germany and they are afraid of Mad Cow Disease. However, I live here already many years (13) and I am not sick. I was kind of disappointed, because I wanted to help. :-(

I think it's wonderful that your mom could give blood for Davin.

When my David was born a friend gave me a sticker that said "Be nice to me, I gave blood today" and she had crossed out "gave blood" and written in "had a baby".

Nice of you to take your mom out to lunch.

Thanks for visiting. Nice to get acquainted. I'll be praying for Davin and all of you, especially as Oct. 11 nears.

My friend has a son named Davin. I had never heard the name before. I will put Davin's name in my prayer book and will pray for a successful surgery.

My husband and I give blood regularly and I have been denied for low iron many times. They said to eat dry Total cereal and drink orange juice to get it back up. I'm not fond of dry cereal unless it's frosted flakes.

Are you anywhere near Wilmington, DE? I lived there for a year.

Kim- I don't hear of other Davins, either. We do appreciate the prayers. We live about 45 minutes from Wilmington, I think. My sister used to live in Delaware. Maybe in Bear??

I knew people who lived in Bear too. Small world.

Kim - my sister worked at Christiana Hospital, I think. Do you know where that is? I don't remember the name of their apartment, though. They really liked Delaware.

That hospital sounds familiar but I can't remember where it is, although I'm sure I walked by it at some point. I was doing a year of volunteer work and didn't have a car so I walked almost everywhere! I lived at the Ursuline convent with the nuns there but volunteered at Holy Spirit School in New Castle, DE and Sojourners' Place in Wilmington.
