A New Van?

We are in the market for a van. Not just any van. We are in the market for a wheelchair accessible van. I have really mixed feelings about getting one, but I do know that it is time. Just a couple of weeks ago, Davin got a bunch of new parts for his wheelchair. It changed the whole thing. It changed it so much that I can no longer easily put the wheelchair into the back of my Jeep. I have been picking up wheelchairs and putting them in the back of my vehicles for almost 12 years, I guess. I know I look awkward doing it, but I was used to doing it and it was no biggy. But, now, when I lift the chair and have to put it in sideways, it's not good. I can tell I could really hurt myself and that is a big No No when you have a child who is not ambulatory. You can not have a hurt back!!! So, today there was a special showing of accessible vans at a special dealer and we went. I pretty much know what we are looking for, so that is not a problem. We also have some funding to make it MUCH easier to afford because all of the adaptations are VERY expensive. The biggest difference will be that I have to be careful where I park. I have to park where there is the big handicap strip (for the lift) and it has to be on the correct side of the van. I also wonder if it will take me a lot longer to put Davin in and out of the car with a lift. We shall see!

Davin is totally excited about getting a new van. Today, he wanted to go in lots of the vans. Any of them that had the ramp already out for him, he wanted to go in and he was so excited to sit in there and see if it had a television screen in it. He is so funny.

This is exciting! I just get your license plate memorized and now I'll have a new one to learn! LOL. It's great you'll be able to get help with the means to pay for the van. Will you get one that goes beep-beep-beep when you go in reverse?

I don't know about that, Mel. I will have to ask:) It certainly would be a nice feature because the full size vans have a lot more blind spots.

OH, I wish you had taken pictures of him going in and out of all those vans. I bet that was cute.

Hey, BTW, on the bottom of your page where it says post a comment, its writen in white and very very hard to find it. Or maybe its just me and I am blind?

Thanks Kelli. I do not think you are blind, so I will check on that and change the color:)

You'll be glad that you did! Plus, now you'll have more room. :)

That van in the photo looks like the old Tealmobile, the one I named Vanna White. You don't need one quite that big, do you?

I remember when Davin got his first wheelchair, the spiffy red one and all the kids wanted a turn pushing him through the church. Out in James' shop is an old purple "walker" type thing that was left when you moved. All the walkers save this one went to Joni and Friends. The purple walker hold James' paint pot when he does his finishing and its on whells so he can pull it along wherever he wants to go.

Okay, let me try again, "It holds James' paint pot and its on wheels..."

Good for you and Davin too, getting a new van. Davin sounds so funny, wanting to test out all the new vans :)

Martha, how did you end up with the purple walker? I don't remember that.

I can't exactly recall... When you moved the pediatric walkers were left behind and somehow we ended up with them. I looked up Joni and Friends to see if they wanted them and Bethany's friend, Pa Lange", dropped them off to a woman out toward Syracuse. Maybe I asked you about donating them? It's all a blur now but the purple walker is hard at work out in Barn 2. I felt a little guilty about him keeping it but there it is. And it looks happy.

Well, I am glad that James can use it. I will tell Davin that he passed that off to him:)

I can imagine what a big purchase that is. It's neat that it's exciting for him.
